GPOD on the Highway: Cincinnati Wildflowers

Joseph right here, your GPOD editor. Final week I used to be within the Cincinnati space for a piece challenge, and I took a while to hike in a couple of space parks. It was excellent time for spring wildflowers, and I noticed some actual beauties!

close up of purple and white wildflowersThis was my hands-down favourite plant on the journey: Delphinium tricorne (Zones 4–8). The acquainted backyard delphiniums are hybrids of European species, however we have now some native species in the USA as effectively. This one is a small spring bloomer that then goes dormant in the summertime—and what a magnificence it’s! Starting from white to darkish purple, every plant was a bit totally different, however all had been lovely. I’m undecided why it isn’t frequent in gardens; it might be an amazing spring-blooming change from the traditional daffodils and tulips.

close up of buckeye tree flowerHow becoming for a visit to Ohio, the Buckeye State, to see a buckeye tree (Aesculus glabra, Zones 4–9) in bloom! The greenish yellow flowers are straightforward to overlook from a distance however fairly lovely up shut.

close up of purple spiderwort flowersSpiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana, Zones 4–9) is a plant I’ve seen many occasions in gardens, however it was enjoyable to see it rising within the wild. The purple flowers are so velvety and excellent.

close up of blue and white wildflowersBlue-eyed Mary (Collinsia verna, annual) has the sweetest little blue flowers. This wildflower is a real annual—the seedlings germinate within the fall, overwinter, after which bloom and die within the spring.

close up of light purple woodland phlox bloomsWoodland phlox (Phlox divaricata, Zones 3–8) was dotted everywhere in the woods, and each plant was a bit totally different: Some extra pink and others bluer, some with large petals and others with slender ones. This clump was notably lovely to my eye.

close up of Trillium with white flowerTrillium flexipes (Zones 3–8) is a lovely species of trillium with large leaves and clear white flowers.

close up of Trillium with yellow flowerI used to be additionally blown away by this specimen of Trillium lutea (Zones 3–8), which would be the largest one I’ve ever seen.

I all the time love getting out into nature. We are able to solely aspire in our gardens to make one thing half as lovely as what nature does all by itself.
